Dumb Georgia Laws
Monday, January 24, 2005

I received one of the most random requests yesterday over instant messenger from a friend, who will remain anonymous (at least until his girlfriend finds out about this one):

Him: quick question
Him: you're going to laugh
Him: but i think you're the only place to find wine on a sunday
Me: what are you looking for?
Him: i'm not picky....something red

To make a long story short, he decides to impress his girlfriend by cooking dinner on a Sunday night, yet is lacking the finishing touch of the bottle of red wine. Being the state of Georgia, it's illegal to sell alcohol on Sundays, so every liquor store from here to Alabama is closed. And its not like many people on campus keep a decent selection of red wine around...

So of course I help him out--what good would friends be if they didn't help you get around Georgia blue laws?

New blog-like section added / San Jose Trip
Sunday, January 23, 2005

As much as I hate to be trendy, I've finally given in to the craze, and added this new blog-like section to my web site. We'll see how well I can do keeping it updated...

In other news, I'm back from the Multimedia Computing and Networking 2005 conference in San Jose. The trip was great--I already miss the palm trees and 60 degree weather though. I'll post photos in a couple days, once I get the film developed and have time to scan them.

I had the most amazing streak of luck flying back. I wish all flying experiences went like this:

  • Arrive at the airport less than an hour before the flight departs, because yes, I'm running really late, yet get to security to find absolutely nobody in line. Still have enough time to grab lunch before boarding.

  • Receive free drinks in coach class simply for being a nice guy... (Thanks to the wonderful flight attendants at Delta)

  • During my 30 minute layover in Salt Lake City, both my arriving and departing are on time despite the light snow and barely 100 foot visibility. Nearly every other flight is delayed or cancelled, and hundreds of people are stranded in the terminal.

  • And, since all of the other connecting flights into Salt Lake were cancelled or delayed, lots of passengers miss the flight, so I end up with a whole row to myself back to Atlanta.
I wonder how much longer this streak of luck can continue...
